Today sees the implementation of a new policy within the Department of Transport’s Blue Badge digital service. People with non-visible disabilities can now access the Blue Badge scheme, representing the most significant change to the scheme in nearly 50 years.

Department for Transport (DfT) has issued new guidance to councils extending eligibility to include people with hidden disabilities, including anxiety disorders and brain injuries. This means that people who cannot walk without considerable psychological distress or risk of serious harm are more able to travel and access the services they need.

Valtech has worked with the DfT and local authority teams to incorporate a new eligibility check process into the award-winning Blue Badge digital service. The Blue Badge digital service was recently re-launched, the result of Valtech’s partnership with the DfT to replace the legacy service, increasing digital take-up, improving completion rates and reducing the overall time take to apply for and receive a Blue Badge.

Jim Strange, Delivery Manager at Valtech says:

“It’s been very rewarding to be part of the work to open up the Blue Badge scheme to more of the people who need a Blue Badge. Working closely with real people who have these non-visible conditions has allowed us to fully understand their needs and reflect them in the online service.”
