2020 Predictions

December 18, 2019

2019 is coming to an end. Following a decade of digital innovations that have changed our society, we are now facing a new and exciting decade

People, companies and governments are all navigating somewhere between Orwell’s 1984, HBO’s Silicon Valley and the idea of a decentralised internet, and Trump’s twitter rampages and fake news.

At the same time, as we are seeing changes that are faster than ever, we are facing regulations that cannot follow the pace - crossed with societal changes. Euromonitor has listed 20 mega trends to be aware of, and I think these are probably the most important ones:

  • Experience More
  • Connected Consumers
  • Shopping Reinvented
  • New Ways of Working

They are all entangled, and in this article, I will share my predictions as it relates to these megatrends.

Over the past decade, we have seen the emergence of so much potential; the iPad, Tesla, streaming giants like Netflix and Spotify, Kickstarter, hi-speed trains, the apple watch, AR, 3D printed organs, and AI. As Benedict Evans puts it:

It took modern smartphones 10 years to “eat the world,” as Andreessen Horowitz analyst Benedict Evans famously puts it; the web, about 20. But in just five years, AI has gone from laboratory curiosity to economic force—contributing an estimated $2 trillion to global GDP in 2017 and 2018, according to accounting firm PricewaterhouseCoopers.[1]

John Pavlus

Luckily, we are just getting started, and as always with technology, nothing is set in stone - unless someone plugs Skynet into our global internet. Then we are all doomed… But until then, I am optimistic about the future.
