QA transformation along with digital transformation

What is Digital? It’s technologies connecting people and machines that enable the exchange of data through an interface, for example: Internet of Things (IoT).

The world is transforming and advancing at an incredible rate and in order to remain competitive, companies have realized that they must transform as well or risk being left behind. As a result, there has been an explosion of digital transformation and innovation. However, with new innovations and more complex and sophisticated technologies, it’s becoming increasingly difficult to adequately test applications and digital solutions. As the digital world evolves, Quality Assurance activities must evolve as well.

Today, consumers want it all: instant & real time, immediate satisfaction, total personalization of services and content, life-changing digital experiences, real brand engagement, consistent customer experience, seamless interactions on all digital omni-channels.

Whether it is e-Commerce, Banking, Travel & Hospitality, Automobiles, Pharmaceuticals, Aeronautics or Space, it is vital to ensure the correctness and accuracy of the functionality that is being developed and delivered. Every digital application is integrated with, and exchanging data with, multiple other applications—demanding a high level of security as well as faultless connectivity.

We all witnessed the WannaCry ransomware attack during May 2017. This is just one example of serious security threats in the current digital world.

Gartner predicts that by 2020, 60% of digital businesses will suffer a major service failure because of their IT team’s inability to manage digital risks in new technology and use cases. Today, every business is vulnerable to the risks inherent to digitization, such as cyber theft, fraud and data loss, as nearly all organizations now interact with customers through a digital interface and increasingly depend on digital technologies for growth.

The old approach of testing every web application in a similar fashion is no longer valid as each digital application requires an additional set of innovative ideas/techniques to test apart from regular testing. Testing is getting more and more complex, costly and time consuming with the increasing number of smart devices, smart appliances, interfacing devices, operating systems, browsers, versions, time-zones, geographic & demographic characteristics, development platforms, business domains, and so on.

As digital applications are fully depending on the Internet, and with an increased emphasis on Internet of Things, attention to be paid towards testing the IoT related areas. Another important area to focus on is Responsive Web Design (RWD) as it plays a major role in our display-centric digital world. Cloud, SEO, Web Analytics, Security & Performance engineering are other critical areas that must also be addressed.

To achieve the success in this digital era,

QA teams must focus on and be abreast of various innovations, latest trends, and acquire niche expertise relating to all the newly emerging tools & technologies
Put the Customer at the Center and give the highest priority to “Customer Experience Testing”, instead of just limiting to the Application Testing
Gain required techniques and enhanced testing capabilities, and come up with a suitable testing approach and methodology for the better-quality deliverables
QA teams must have an integrated test platform, a robust test automation framework which is tool & platform independent, and an effective manual & mobile testing strategy
To be a successful QA professional, we must focus on upgrading our skills with regards to the newly emerging tools & technologies in order to deliver better and safer digital experiences.
